Residence permit renewal: when to apply, what it costs, what the receipt is worth
The application must be filed at least sixty days before expiry, and in most cases it is posted using the yellow kit from the post office. It costs between €116 and €176. From the moment you post it, the receipt gives you the same rights as the permit: to work, to stay registered with the health service, to keep your residency.

Renewing your residence permit is the paperwork that keeps coming back. Every one or two years it starts again, and every time the questions are the same: when do I have to move, where do I go, how much do I pay, and in the meantime is my stay still legal?
This guide answers those four questions. How to fill in the yellow postal kit, box by box, is a separate article: you will find it linked below.
When: at least sixty days before
Article 5(4) of the immigration consolidated act — legislative decree 286/1998 — says the renewal application must be filed at least sixty days before your current permit expires.
Those sixty days are not a formality. They are the time the police headquarters needs to give you an appointment and process the file while your permit is still valid. Applying in the last week is not illegal: it just leaves you no margin, so any hitch — a missing document, a rescheduled appointment — becomes a problem instead of an inconvenience.
The date to write down is not the expiry date: it is the expiry date minus two months. That is the first reminder worth setting, and it is exactly what the Bahay Italia deadline tracker does.
What if I am already late?
Being late does not automatically kill the application: the police headquarters still examines it and asks you why. But it is an accident, not an option: the more time passes, the harder your position is to explain. If you are out of time, the right move is to apply now rather than wait longer, and to get help from a patronato or a CAF if the situation is tangled.
Where: almost always at the post office, sometimes at the police
For most types of stay the application is not filed at the police headquarters: it is posted from a post office using the yellow-banded kit, under the agreement between the Ministry of the Interior and Poste Italiane. The kit is free; the postal service is not.
Among those that go through the postal kit:
- employed work, self-employed work and the cases in article 27 of the consolidated act;
- seasonal work and awaiting employment;
- family reasons (articles 29, 30, 31) and child assistance (art. 31(3));
- study, traineeship and vocational training;
- scientific research, religious reasons, elective residence;
- EU permit for long-term residents;
- residence card for family members of EU and Italian citizens;
- awaiting Italian citizenship;
- conversion of the permit (for example from study to work);
- updates (change of address, marital status, new passport, adding children) and duplicates.
If your reason is not on this list, the application is filed at the police headquarters, at the Immigration Office of the province where you live. Applications filed by lawyers, legal guardians or support administrators also go there, whatever their type.
Do not trust a list read once, this one included: before buying the kit, check your own police headquarters' page. They publish the current list and often the documents to attach for each type of permit.
What gets checked again
Renewal is not an automatic stamp. The police headquarters checks that the conditions the permit was granted on still exist. In practice, almost always:
- the reason for your stay: with an employed-work permit you must still be working, or waiting for employment;
- income: it must exist, be provable, and the contributions must have been paid. The threshold is tied to the social allowance, which changes every year: ask a patronato for the exact figure or check the current year's INPS circular;
- housing, where it was required;
- continuity of stay. This is the least known rule and the one that does the most damage.
How long you can stay outside Italy
Article 13 of the implementing regulation — presidential decree 394/1999 — says the permit is not renewed when the stay in Italy has been interrupted for more than six continuous months; and, for permits lasting at least two years, when the interruption exceeds half their validity. Military obligations and other «serious and proven reasons» are the exception.
In plain words: a long trip home, illness in the family, a job abroad that lasted longer than planned can cost you the permit. If you already know you will be away for a long time, talk to whoever assists you first, and keep proof of the reason.
How much it costs
The bill has four items. Three are the same for everyone; the fourth depends on which permit you are asking for.
| Item | Amount | Where you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue stamp | €16.00 | at a tobacconist, stuck on the form |
| Post office service | €30.00 | at the counter, on handing it in |
| Production of the electronic permit | €30.46 | pre-printed slip inside the kit |
| Fee, permit over 3 months up to 1 year | €40.00 | same slip |
| Fee, permit over 1 year up to 2 years | €50.00 | same slip |
| Fee, EU permit for long-term residents | €100.00 | same slip |
So, roughly: a two-year work renewal comes to about €126; a one-year renewal about €116; the long-term permit about €176.
The payment slip is already inside the kit, made out to the Ministry of Economy and Finance on postal account 67422402. You write the amount: the cost of the document plus the fee that applies to you. If you are unsure about the figure, ask at the counter before paying — a wrong slip can be redone, but the file stops in the meantime.
Who does not pay the fee
Exempt from the fee (but not from the cost of the document):
- people under eighteen;
- those who entered Italy for medical treatment, and their companions;
- asylum seekers and those applying for or holding a form of protection;
- those asking for an update or a duplicate of a valid permit.
The €40, €50 and €100 amounts have applied since 9 June 2017. They used to be €80, €100 and €200: the Lazio administrative court annulled them in 2016 and the Council of State confirmed that in 2020. If you still see €80, €100 or €200 somewhere — it happens, even on serious-looking sites — you are reading an old page.
The receipt: what it is actually worth
When you post the kit, the clerk hands you two sheets: the insured-mail receipt and the appointment letter for the police headquarters, with date, time and address. Until you collect the new permit, those are your documents: photograph them and keep them safe.
The State Police puts it plainly: a person holding the receipt proving the renewal application was filed has the same rights attached to holding the residence permit. In practice, with the receipt you:
- keep working legally, and an employer can hire you or keep you on;
- stay registered with the health service;
- keep your residency and can ask the registry office for certificates.
One case deserves separate treatment: leaving Italy and coming back with the receipt alone. The rules depend on the country you return from and the route you take, and a mistake there cannot be fixed from this side of the border. If you have a trip planned, ask the police headquarters or a patronato first: it is a five-minute question that avoids a problem lasting months.
How long it takes
The law says sixty days from the application. Reality, in many provinces, is slower: several months is normal, and in some places it approaches a year. That is not a reason to postpone applying: it is a reason to apply early and not to count on a date.
You can check the status online on the immigration portal with the insured-mail code and the hologram code printed on your receipt. When the permit is ready, the police headquarters tells you when to collect it: collection is in person.
Once renewed, you have sixty days left
There is a final step almost nobody knows about, and it has nothing to do with the police: when you collect the new permit you have sixty days to go back to the municipality and renew your declaration of habitual residence. If you do not, six months after expiry the municipality can remove you from the registry — that is, you lose your residency and everything attached to it. There is a dedicated guide, linked to this one.
With Bahay Italia
Inside Bahay Italia the renewal becomes a deadline with a reminder: you record the type of permit and its expiry date, and the app warns you in time for the sixty-day mark, in your own language. We do not ask you to scan the permit: we only keep the dates, and your documents stay yours.
This guide explains the national rule. Every police headquarters has its own timings, desks and sometimes its own requirements: your province's page is the place to check for details. If there is something particular about your situation — a long period outside Italy, a contract that ended, an application already refused — do not work it out alone: a patronato, a CAF or a lawyer costs less than a lost renewal.
