The ISEE: the number that decides what you pay, and how to get it free

School meals, school bus, book vouchers, the single allowance, nursery: they all go through the ISEE, and those without one end up in the highest band. It is free at a CAF or online, takes ten working days and expires on 31 December every year. The three things that get applications refused are in here.

Residence permit renewal: when to apply, what it costs, what the receipt is worth

The application must be filed at least sixty days before expiry, and in most cases it is posted using the yellow kit from the post office. It costs between €116 and €176. From the moment you post it, the receipt gives you the same rights as the permit: to work, to stay registered with the health service, to keep your residency.

The paper ID card is no longer valid: how to replace it (in Rome, by email)

Since 3 August 2026 the paper identity card has expired all at once, whatever date is printed on it. Until 31 January 2027 it still works for healthcare, public offices and banks; after that you need the electronic one. In Rome the replacement is requested by email to your own Municipio.

The Italian test for the long-term permit: the level is A2, and you need 80 %

Everyone explains how to send the request, almost nobody says which level is required and what score you need to pass. They are two numbers, and both are in the decree: A2, and at least eighty per cent of the score. Anyone who already holds an A2 certificate does not take the test at all.

Family and home Torino

Turin's mobile library comes to Vanchiglia: every Monday in piazza Santa Giulia, and the card is free

From Monday 12 October 2026 Bibliobus 1 stops in piazza Santa Giulia, every Monday from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm. It is a library on wheels: you borrow and return books, sign up on the spot and use the wi-fi. Joining costs nothing and all you need is a valid identity document and your tax code. The stop is a trial and runs to the end of the year: in January the city reviews the timetable based on how many people used it.

Free nurseries in Tuscany: applications close on 26 October, but you need the INPS bonus first

The Tuscany Region has reopened applications for Nidi Gratis: until 6 pm on 26 October 2026 you can ask for a discount on your nursery fee, up to €527.27 a month per child, with an ISEE up to €40,000. It applies across Tuscany, Florence included. One condition the press releases skip: you must already have applied to INPS for the nursery bonus, because the Region pays the part INPS does not refund.

Residence permit

Family reunification: two years of residence are required, but not for minor children

To bring your spouse, a dependent adult child or a parent to Italy you need two uninterrupted years of legal residence: Decree-Law 145/2024 requires it. For children under 18 that requirement does not exist. You also need an income starting at 10,651.68 euros in 2026 and a home declared suitable by the municipality. «Legal stay» is not registered residence, and prefectures do not all count it the same way. The clearance takes up to 150 days.
